Public Education Manager
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL JOB POSTING
 
We are a recruiting a Public Education Manager to lead our team of educators!
 
The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region supports survivors of sexual violence. We listen, facilitate healing, and celebrate resiliency. Using an anti-racist, intersectional feminist approach, we work to transform systems which promote gender-based violence.
 
Our Public Education Program is amongst the strongest in the in the VAW sector in Canada. We have a team of educators working to prevent sexual violence, and other forms of gendered violence, through education, training, curriculum, systemic advocacy, and community mobilization.
 
Our Public Education Manager will be a leader who takes initiative and has experience managing and inspiring a team and juggling multiple projects. They’ll be inspired by our work and have a strong desire to support our Mission, Vision, and Values. They’ll be an experienced communicator, facilitator and educator, with a passion for working with people of all ages and educating for social change. They’ll be a strategic thinker, driven to grow and further develop our Public Education Program, including our Male Allies Program. They’ll also have the capacity and know-how to help move our mission forward remotely as necessary during COVID-19.
 
Essential Requirements of Education / Experience:
  • Degree in the social sciences and 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience managing staff, volunteers, budgets, and projects.
 
Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Provide support and supervision to staff members in our Public Education/Male Allies Programs.
  • Ensure leadership, project management, report writing, and accountability on all projects in the Public Education Program.
  • Coordinate and provide public education, trainings, and workshops addressing sexual and gendered violence, or delegate these trainings to other staff members in the Public Education Program.
  • Develop or support the development of curriculum related to preventing and responding to sexual assault and harassment, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and other forms of gendered violence.
  • Ensure SASC’s curriculum and training materials and presentations incorporate an anti-racist, intersectional lens.
  • Support the Executive Director with media requests.
  • Act as an ambassador for our Centre with the broader community, partners, and funders.
  • Be an active member of SASC’s management team.
 
Knowledge and Skill Required:
  • In-depth knowledge of the root causes of sexual/gendered violence, and how it intersects with other systems of oppression including racism, colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc.
  • Strong understanding of best practices in educating towards social change.
  • Highly organized, with experience managing staff, volunteers, projects, and budgets.
  • Skilled public speaker, including experience working with media.
  • Skilled writer, to support curriculum development and grant-writing.
  • Experience with a broad range of social media platforms.
 
Compensation:
SASC managers earn between $61,107 to $71,890 annually based on a 35-hour work week.  
 
We have a health benefit plan including Extended Health Care (EHC), Dental, Employee Life Insurance, Dependent’s Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Long-Term Disability (LTD), and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). We pay 100% of health benefit premiums for our full-time staff and their families.
 
Due to the nature of our work, our staff team start with four weeks of vacation and one week of personal time. We also health/sick hours totalling 12 days per year.

We offer RRSP matching after one year of employment.

Job Description – Public Education Manager
 
Job purpose
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Public Education Manager is responsible for the management of our Public Education Program, including our Male Allies Program. This program provides leadership and training to prevent sexual and gendered violence through education, systemic advocacy, and community collaboration. At SASC, we educate towards social change and raises awareness of the issue of sexual and gender-based violence in Waterloo Region, and beyond.
 
Duties and responsibilities
Human Resources
  • Provide support, coaching, training, and regular supervision to staff members in the Public Education program, including the Male Allies program.
  • Lead hiring processes in the Public Education Program, in partnership with the Human Resources Manager, ensuring onboarding and offboarding processes.
 
Program Management
  • Ensure overall management in the Public Education Program including needs assessments, program design, development, implementation, regular evaluation and statistics collection.
  • Coordinate and/or provide public education, trainings, and workshops addressing sexual and gendered violence, or delegate these trainings to other staff members in the Public Education Program.
  • Develop or support the development of curriculum related to preventing and responding to sexual assault and harassment, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and other forms of gendered violence.
  • Ensure SASC’s curriculum, training materials, and presentations incorporate an anti-racist, intersectional lens, and credits/references sources appropriately.
  • Ensure the coordination of public education activities for Sexual Violence Prevention Month.
  • Create annual operational plans for the Public Education Program, building on our Strategic Plans, in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Seek out funding for our Public Education Program and write funding applications, in consultation with the Executive Director.
 
Project Management
  • Ensure a system is in place to track all the deliverables and deadlines related to each funded project in the Public Education Program, providing monthly updates to the Executive Director, flagging any areas of concern.
  • Work with the public education team to ensure the management of all funded projects in the Public Education Program, including providing progress reports and writing reports as requested.
  • Ensure all documents related to funders and funders’ requirements (reports, etc.) are saved appropriately.
  • Ensure adherence to and ongoing monitoring of all project budgets in the Public Education Program, in partnership with the Director of Finance & Operations.
  • Communicate with funders in the Public Education Program as delegated by the Executive Director, ensuring the Executive Director is included in important communications as appropriate. Nurture relationships with project funders to encourage ongoing and expanded relationships.
 
Public Relations
  • Coordinate and provide public education, trainings, and workshops addressing sexual and gendered violence, or delegate these trainings to other staff members in the Public Education Program.
  • Connect and partner with community-based organizations serving diverse and marginalized, populations to ensure our public education programming is reflective of, and accessible to, our community.
  • Liaise with universities, colleges, secondary schools, elementary schools, police, hospitals, public health, and other community partners, organizations and businesses to provide ongoing training and educational opportunities.
  • Represent and act as an ambassador for SASC and the Public Education Program in the community.
  • Sit on relevant internal and external committees, acting as an ambassador for the Centre.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in social action events in the community related to our Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Support the Executive Director with public relations, including acting as the primary person responding to public education focused media requests.
 
Communication
  • Ensure the quality of materials and curriculum coming out of our Public Education Program reflect the professionalism and anti-racist, anti-oppression values of our Centre.
  • Ensure effective communication amongst Public Education staff, and with other program areas.
  • Ensure members of the Public Education team are working in effective partnership with staff members responsible for the overall communications/social media/fundraising.
  • Act as a liaison between the Public Education Program and the Executive Director and/or Leadership Team.
 
General Management Team Responsibilities
  • Provide input into strategic directions for the Centre and for the Public Education Program.
  • Attend management meetings, supporting other programs/managers as needed.
  • Provide management support to the Executive Director as needed.
 
Additionally, in a small agency, it is often the case that work of a nature similar to that in each job is either assigned or known to be necessary to be done. As well, from time to time, work that is not similar in nature to the job may also be required to be done by individuals in any job in order to accomplish the SASC’s purpose.


Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in the social sciences with 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent.
 
Required skills, knowledge and competencies:
  • Knowledge of intersectional feminism, sexual violence, violence against women, trans, and non-binary folks, anti-racism, oppression, systems of power and privilege, and other experiences of marginalization
  • Understanding and appreciation of engaging men in the work of ending gendered violence
  • Ability to handle a large-volume workload calmly and efficiently
  • Multi-tasking and project management
  • Consistently demonstrates tact, professionalism, and sound judgement
  • Experience managing staff, volunteers, projects, and budgets
  • Knowledge of marketing, promotional work, social media, and public relations

Communications
Excellent communications and interpersonal/human relations skills are critical to the success of this position. It is responsible for important communication of concepts and dealing with the more significant issues relating to clients or groups of people both within and outside the organization. The position participates at the senior level within the organization requiring input into strategic decisions.
 
Working Conditions
This job is performed in a comfortable office environment, with frequent need to travel to external locations to present and facilitate and attend community meetings. Much of the work in the office involves sitting, but there is opportunity to stand and move about the office.
 
Direct reports
This position currently supervises five full-time educators in the Public Education Program.
This position may also supervise the work of students and volunteers in the program
Counsellor/Advocate (Part Time)

The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region supports survivors of sexual violence. We listen, facilitate healing, and celebrate resiliency. Using an intersectional feminist approach, we work to transform systems which promote gender-based violence.
 
Due to the generosity of our community and COVID relief funds, we’re recruiting for a part-time (17.5 hours/week) Counsellor/Advocate! Reporting to our Counselling Manager, the successful candidates should feel inspired by our work and have a genuine desire to support our mission, vision, and values. They will have experience providing support to individuals who have experienced sexual violence and a warmth and maturity about them.
 
Essential Requirements of Education:
  • Post-secondary education in a counselling-related program
 
Key Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Individual and group counselling with survivors of sexual violence 
  • Advocacy and accompaniments with survivors 
  • Maintenance of client files and statistics 
  • Student supervision, as required 
 
Knowledge and Skills Required: 
  • Knowledge of sexual violence, trauma, and recovery 
  • Proven skills in counselling, group facilitation, crisis intervention, and advocacy with survivors of sexual violence 
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-violence work and an intersectional feminist approach 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills 
 
Office hours are 9:00AM to 4:30PM; however, some flexibility is needed for evening and occasional weekend work.  
*Due to the COVID pandemic, staff are working remotely.
 
Salary:  $28.48 to $33.50 per hour and a generous vacation package. This is a 1-year contract role beginning immediately. Note: Part-time employees are not expected to attend internal meetings or participate on committees.

JOB DESCIPTION – COUNSELLOR/ADVOCATE 
Duties and Responsibilities 
Reporting to the Counselling Manager, our Counsellor / Advocates are accountable to provide supportive, strengths-based, non-judgmental advocacy, psycho-education, and individual and group counselling to survivors and their families who have been impacted by sexual violence. 
  
Duties and Responsibilities 
Direct Service  
  • Provide an average of 12 individual counselling sessions per week based on 17.5 hours/week) for people, 16 years of age and older, who have experienced and/or have been impacted by sexual violence. 
  • Provide advocacy and accompaniments to survivors. Provide accompaniments to court, the hospital, the police station, mental health appointments, CIBC hearings, etc.  
  • Write letters of support/advocacy and CICB therapy reports. 
  • Participate in case conferences and consultations. 
  • Make appropriate referrals to other community services and communicate with other service providers to support clients.  
  • Maintain and build community partnerships, within the scope of a Counsellor/Advocate role.  
  • Provide practical assistance to clients as necessary and available. (ie. bus tickets, grocery vouchers, hygiene products, food items, book loans, etc.) 
  • Provide support with Group Counselling as requested by the Counselling Manager including recruiting, screening, and completing intake with participants. This position may also involve some group program preparation, facilitation, and evaluation. 
Other  
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision sessions, and meetings with the Manager of Counselling Services.  
  • Maintain client files. Respond to client inquiries, prepare for future sessions, complete monthly and quarterly statistics, provide information about SASC to community members and participate in team meetings. 
  • Ensure continuing competency by seeking out professional development opportunities, clinical consultation, and debriefing support.  
 
Additionally, in a small agency, it is often the case that work of a nature similar to that in each job is either assigned or known to be necessary to be done. As well, from time to time, work that is not similar in nature to the job may also be required to be done by individuals in any job in order to accomplish the SASC’s purpose.  
 
 
Qualifications 
  • Post-secondary education in a counselling-related program and 5 years of relevant experience. 
  • Knowledge and training pertaining to sexual violence, trauma and recovery. 
  • Proven skills in support, crisis intervention, safety planning, and advocacy with survivors of gender-based violence.  
  • Familiarity with community services.  
  • Knowledge of how sexual violence relates to forms of oppression. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with marginalized and at-risk communities.  
  • Experience supporting and advocating for survivors with mental health needs, safety concerns, etc.  
  • Exceptional organizational, time-management, and communication skills.  
  • A strong ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.  
  • Must attend and successfully complete volunteer training program upon initial employment.  
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.  
 
Communications 
Strong communications and interpersonal/human relations skills are required in the position to articulate policy, concepts, etc., motivate others and effect change both inside and outside the organization. There is regular contact with clients, as well as community partners. 
 
Working Conditions  
This job is partly performed in a comfortable office environment, with occasional travel around Waterloo Region to partner agencies. Much of the work in the office involves sitting, but there is opportunity to stand and move about.  
 
This job requires intense concentration during meetings with clients. Repeated exposure to details of violence and assault can lead to vicarious trauma. The need for debriefing, communication with management, self-care, and balance is critical for incumbents in this position.  
 
Direct Reports 
While no employees report to this position, our Counsellor/Advocate may supervise the work of students in the program.
