SASC is a member of the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC).

The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region’s offices are on, and our work is done in, the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishnaabe and Chonnonton Peoples. This land, known as the Haldimand Tract, spans 6 miles on either side of the Grand River and was promised to Indigenous people. However, this land was taken without consent. Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people face high rates of sexual and gender-based violence through ongoing colonial genocide of Indigenous people. There are over 5,000 missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people across Turtle Island that our systems have left behind. A 2016 Public Safety report released statistics that indicate that, while Indigenous women only make up 4% of the Canadian population, they roughly make up 50% of trafficking victims (NativeWomensAssociationOfCanada-e.pdf).

Acknowledging this is not enough. In our work to end sexual and gender-based violence we must address the colonial roots of this violence and support Indigenous survivors. We must collaborate with Indigenous communities in the spirit of the Dish with One Spoon covenant and the Two Row Wampum to amplify Indigenous voices. We must do our part to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action. We also believe in supporting the work of local Indigenous organizations and amplifying their voices. SASC wishes to acknowledge the Indigenous organizations in our community that we have the privilege of working with and alongside in our efforts: Willow River Centre, Healing of the Seven Generations, and Ganohkwasra Family Assault Support Services.

As an organization and as individuals, we recognize that our learning is never complete. We would like to thank Crow Shield Lodge and Jessica Bomberry for their facilitation of training for our staff, as well as recognize Shara Francis- Herne for sharing her wealth of knowledge while facilitating gatherings of frontline staff working with survivors through the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres. We are deeply grateful to local Indigenous organizations and individuals for their invaluable guidance and knowledge, which empower us to carry out the essential work needed in our communities.
